A short history
From ice to modern refrigerants
Early refrigeration: ice
Early refrigeration used consumable coolants such as ice. Natural ice was cut from frozen lakes and rivers in winter, stored in insulated ice houses and delivered to homes and shops, where it was kept in wooden ice boxes. Once the ice melted it had to be replaced – cooling was expensive, seasonal and unreliable.
The age of Freon
With mechanical refrigeration came synthetic refrigerants. For decades chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) such as R12 – widely known as Freon – were used in refrigerators, freezers and car air conditioners. When it was found that they damage the ozone layer, they were phased out under the Montreal Protocol and replaced by refrigerants with zero ozone depletion potential, such as those we offer today.
